ABOUT US
Why a Freedom School...
Our Iowa City Freedom School model is being developed with a diverse group of partners and individuals, in the tradition of the 1964 Mississippi Freedom Summer Schools, which saw education as essential for social change.
In the last 4 years, the Iowa Legislature has passed a series of laws limiting the honest teaching of our racial history in grades K-12, banning books, and removing diversity, equity, and inclusion offices and programming in public schools and universities. These laws have had the intended impact of stifling efforts to promote inclusion and equity; creating hostile environments for school boards, educators, and school/university staff; limiting comprehensive student learning about essential social issues and history; and creating a chilling effect on teachers and professors across the state.
From June 15-19, we are piloting a week-long Freedom School in Iowa City for up to 45 middle school students of color (including 2 evening dinners with extended families/households). The curriculum draws on centuries of “freedom schooling” that began in the era of enslavement— education by and for Black communities linked to liberation and the democratic project itself. Our goal is to provide a liberatory education model and equip organizers, participants, and families with knowledge and tools to be change-makers in their communities.
